Vishu (विशु) is an auspicious day for Keralites & Tuluvas. Out of all the festivities and celebrations, the most important one is Vishukkani. Vishukkani means the ‘first thing seen after waking up on Vishu day’. Just a night before various arrangements are done for this ritual. Articles like lemons, raw rice, betel leaves, cucumber, metal mirror, arecanut, yellow flowers konna are put in a bell metal vessel. On Vishu day, the custom is to wake up at dawn and go to the pooja room with eyes closed so that Vishukkani is the first sight in the morning. Various other prayers, poojas and activities are followed for rest of the day.
