Navratri (नवरात्रि) is the 9 days long Hindu festival of worship and dance. In Sanskrit, the word Navratri (नवरात्रि) literally means nine nights. Nava means nine and Ratri mean Nights. During these 9 nights, nine forms of shakti (power) are worshiped. Each day is dedicated to a Goddess and has very important significance. The first day of Navaratri (नवरात्रि) is also called as Ghatasthapana. Navratri in 2013 will begin on Saturday, 5th October and will last until Sunday, 13th October.

The first three days of Navratri (नवरात्रि) are dedicated to Goddess Durga, dressed in red and mounted on a lion. Her various incarnations – Kumari, Parvati and Kali are worshiped during these days. Next three days are dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi who is regarded as the Goddess of prosperity and knowledge. The last three days are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati also known as the Goddess of knowledge. Navratri (नवरात्रि) celebrates the slaying of Mahishasura by the Goddess Durga. The festival is observed all over India, particularly in Northern, Eastern, and Western India.
