Dhanteras (धनतेरस) is a festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. On this day people worship Goddess Lakshmi and pray for good health, wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras (धनतेरस) is usually observed in the month of October or November. However, Dhanteras (धनतेरस) in 2017 will be observed on Tuesday, 17th October. Dhanteras (धनतेरस) also marks the beginning of Diwali festivities and celebrations. The most common ritual followed by people for this day is purchasing precious metals and or steel / copper/ brass utensils. Procedure of Dhanteras Puja:

The main activities done during Dhanteras puja includes worshiping Lord Dhanvantri, Ganesh, and Lakshmi. The top highlight of the festival is worshiping the lamp and praying Yamaraj and the ancestors.

On Dhanteras people decorate the idols or Lord Ganesh & Goddess Lakshmi, offer special dishes as bhog to them. Also offer flowers and coins followed by chanting the Lakshmi mantra 108 times.

Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah”

• Dhanteras puja is done in the evening after sighting the stars.
• Place a wooden platform and draw the symbol of Swastik in rangoli. In the middle of the Swastik, place a lamp with four wicks. Make a hole in a cowry shell, place it on the lamp and light the lamp with oil or ghee. This is also called as Yamadeep or the lamp dedicated to Yamraj, the god of death and to pay respect to the ancestors of the family.
