Masaba Gupta – Young & Influential Fashion Designers
Masaba Gupta is an Indian fashion designer born in the year 1989 to West Indian cricketer Viv Richards and Indian actress Neena Gupta and is known to be as the youngest designer to unveil at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2010. She sells her designer merchandise under the label ‘Masaba’. Masaba was born and spent her entire childhood in Mumbai. During her childhood she thought to become a tennis player but dropped the idea sometime later. She was passionate about dance and music. She wanted to join Shiamak Davar’s dance group after learning dance from him, but her mother suggested against it. Then she took up a course in music in London. She did not complete the course and returned to India.
Later she joined Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University where she learned fashion design from her mentor Wendell Rodricks and ended up winning three awards for her collection at her college graduation show. She began her career at the age of 19 whe she applied for Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai and named her collection as ‘Kattran’ ( miniature bits of fabric). Later in the the year 2012 at the age of 24 she joined as a youngest fashion designer at Satya Paul. She is known for her unconventional prints along with feminine drapes and silhouettes.
In July 2009, Masaba launched her own label called ‘Masaba’ which gained immense popularity especially amongst the youth of the country. Today, “Masaba” is a brand that caters to the women of the age group 25 to 50 years. Her designs are a true mix of artistic & aesthetic pieces that formulates into an Indian fusion. Her designs incorporate modernism as well as embed traditional roots of the Indian origin.
