Gulmarg literally means ‘the path of roses’ where gul means rose and marg means path. Gulmarg is a small hill resort in Baramula district in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. Gulmarg was originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ the name of Lord Shiva’s wife, but was re-christened as ‘Gulmarg’ in 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was mesmerized by the beautiful landscapes. Then it was just grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Today it is not just a hill-station or a winter holiday resort – it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country’s premier ski resort in the winter.
