The 'Bug' is all set to roll out on Indian roads as the company Volkswagon plans to bring it by 2009. And all this even as the Indian version 'Nano' from Tatas hogged the limelight since its unveiling at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Beetle comes to India by 2009

Come 2009, Indians will have the chance to own the original 'people's car' - the Beetle – as German car maker Volkswagen has firmed up plans for its introduction in the country. The company has been looking at using the Beetle as a brand building tool for Volkswagen as it prepares to get into the highly competitive Indian compact car segment by 2010.

Beetle is now manufactured in Mexico for VW's worldwide supplies and could come to India through the completely built unit import route. VW is investing 580 million euros (approx Rs 3,600 crore) in setting up a manufacturing facility at Chakan in Maharashtra from where it would roll out is small car for the Indian market.
It plans to launch its compact car based on the Polo platform in two variants - hatchback and sedan -- once it starts production at its Chakan plant in Maharashtra.

Mueller said that the car based on Polo platform will be rolled out from our upcoming plant (in Chakan) by the first half of 2010
and from next year, the plant would also produce group firm Skoda's new Fabia. The company is also on a dealership network expansion. It currently has eight dealers in the country and plans to increase to 15 by the end of this year. Besides, the company is also planning to introduce its sports utility vehicle Touareg in India by early next year.

"The SUV will be officially launched in the first quarter of 2009", Mueller said while handing over the SUV to the German Ambassador in India, Bernd Muetzelburg, in New Delhi. Earlier the company had said it was looking at bringing in a number of other products, like Passat CC, Phaeton and its SUV range. The company currently sells Passat and the newly launched Jetta in the Indian market.

Comment on Kishore's Comment : - No other car is qualified to be named to compare with Beetle on the depth of its legendary - Price should be within Rs.5.00 lakhs

  • shree said about 1 month ago:
Friends, those who have sat in the Beetle, will know that it is medium to large segment car. No way we can expect this below 1000K (10 lakhs). It may well be more than that. Ofcourse who wont wish to possess this beauty for sub 500K. I am sure it will be a runway hit, like Nano, at those levels. One should always hope.
