Wild Canopy Nature Reserve

Wild Canopy Reserve is located adjoining the Mudumalai wildlife at Masinagudi, Karnataka. It is situated in one corner of the 300 acres of Coffee estate at an altitude of 950 meters in a natural scrub forest.

If you’d rather admire the fauna from afar,the Wild Canopy Reserve sees to it that your rooms are higher than an elephant’s eye – forty-one feet high, to be exact. The Tree Houses available at this resort are built on huge Jamoon trees by the local artisans using indigenous techniques and eco friendly methods. Each tree house is about 40 feet high and has hot and cold water in its quaint toilet. They over look a water hole, which is frequented by the resident wildlife. Guests have seen many incredible and interesting sights at the water hole, from the spotted deer and grey langur having pool parties to a lone tusker having fun with a piece of hose. The trees are also home to families of grey langur who happily co-exist.


The in house chef is renowned for the absolutely fabulous cuisine, (be it Indian, Chinese or Continental) he provides. One can dine under the trees, stars, or canopies, but wherever it is the food is sumptuous and lavish. Room service is also available.

There are no televisions, phones, music, and human sounds. So one can either just relax or go out on treks, safaris or just gentle walks with our highly experienced field activities staff. Swimming is possible in the natural pools in the jungle stream, which flows through the estate. The Safari and trekking tracks have been thoughtfully and carefully designed keeping in mind adventure, trill, and safety of the guest and wild life. Viewing corridors are maintained for the un-obtrusive viewing of wildlife in their natural habitat. Machans and waterholes are located at strategic spots to enhance the wilderness experience of the guest.

The Estate is situated on the foot hills of the Nilgiris is nearly 150 years old and was originally a hunting lodge for a British solider stationed in Ooty, way back in 1869. It was latter converted into a coffee estate, and was the only coffee plantation to have flood irrigation. It was one of the highest yielding coffee estates in the 1950s and 60s. The estate adjoins the Mudumalai wild life sanctuary and is therefore full of wildlife.


This private wild life reserve has become an excellent place for breeding of wild animals and birds in their natural habitat. Animals such as Malabar squirrel, Sambar deer, spotted deer, wild dog (Dhole), Gaur (Bison), elephant, leopard, tiger, porcupine etc now breed and bring up their young within the reserve. The 300 odd acres is a haven for the wildlife, which includes Elephant, Gaur (bison), leopard, tiger, wild dogs, hyena, sloth bear, porcupine, sambar deer and lots and lots of spotted deer, wild boar, Malabar squirrel, grey langur, and monkeys.

HOW TO GET THERE
Wild Canopy Reserve is not very far from some of the major cities of South India and is easily accessible once you touch down at Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore and Coimbatore. Driving down from these cities (except Chennai) could be a scenic and thoroughly enjoyable way to reach us, although there are other ways of getting here as well.

From Ooty

By Road: Ooty is 35km from Wild Canopy Reserve. Driving route: Get on to the Ooty - Mysore Road, turn right about one km after HPF (at the village) onto the Kalahatti (Segur Ghat) road which is also the Ooty - Mysore 'shortcut'. Approximately 5km after you pass Chamanatha Village, turn left onto the Tarmac Road. You are now 6 Km from Wild Canopy Reserve. One word of caution – This winding road has 36 hairpin bends and steepest in South India. DRIVE WITH CARE

Approx. driving time from Ooty: 45 min to one hour.

By Bus:Get onto a Masinagudi bound bus and hop off at Masinagudi and you could hire a local jeep or call Wild Canopy Reserve for pickup.

From Bangalore

By Road: Bangalore is 247km from Wild Canopy Reserve with a driving time of approximately 5 hours. En route you pass through the historic city of Mysore and the twin sanctuaries of Bandipur and Mudumalai. Possibly the easiest way to get here.

By Bus: There are many Ooty bound buses that leave Bangalore at periodic intervals – morning , afternoon and evening. Please check local timings at the KSRTC Bus Stand in Bangalore. Buy a ticket upto Theppakadu and after driving through for 6 hours easily hop off at Mudumalai Wildlife Reception Centre. From Theppakadu, the local transport is in the form of shared Jeeps or you could call Wild Canopy Reserve from the Wildlife Department Office or the 'Youth Hostel'.

By Train: There are many passenger trains shuttling between Bangalore & Mysore. Check local departure timings. The most convenient one would be the Shatabdi that leaves Bangalore at around 11:00am and reaches Mysore a little after 1.00 pm.

Tranquil Plantations

There are two types of Tree Accomadation.The First Tree House has an area of 500 sq feet is about 40 feet high in the trees.

The second tree house or the 'Tree-villa' is child friendly. It has an area of 1000 sq feet with a large 8 foot wide veranda on two sides, two bathrooms (one with a 6 point shower, & one with a panoramic view) and a dressing area. Apart from the double bed, the room has the additional facility of two extra single beds within the room.

Both the Tree House and Tree-villa are walking distance from the house in a private area amidst greenery. There is hot water, all modern amenities ( fridge, T.V.) phone and generator back up. The rooms are mosquito proofed as well. There is an inclined plane walkway leading up to both the Tree Houses with just a few steps.
