Weekend hiking is almost a culture and hobby among outdoorsmen in and around Pune. Mumbai and Pune have a weekend hiking tradition with enthusiasts heading to discover places from their city. Pune offers numerous forts and mountains in the vicinity which are ideal for one or two day trekking and hiking. You can easily take a weekend break from the hustles and bustles of the city life and head for a hiking destination. All the Puneites who hear the call of the mountains read on for the top adventure hiking trips and indulge yourself in rock climbing, hiking, paragliding and other adventure sports in and around your city of Pune.

Following are the Top 10 Adventure Hiking Trips in and around Pune:
khodala Trip
Nestled at an altitude of 1800 feet in Thane district of Maharashtra, Khodala is a dense woody place in a hilly environment. Blessed with rocky terrain and marvelous environment, Khodala gives an unusual feeling of being out in the wilderness, thus making it a wonderful place for hiking from Pune. A visit to Khodala offers a wonderful experience of adventurous sports like trekking, hiking, mountain biking, waterfall rappelling and many other adventure activities.

Shivneri
This fort is the birth place of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shivneri Fort in Pune is a well known historical military fortification. Located approximately 105 km from Pune, this is a must visit place for any Sahyadri enthusiastic hikers and trekkers. The boundary wall of the Shivneri Fort was built so high to protect the fort from the enemies.

Lonar crater
The Lonar Crater offers spectacular views with good hiking opportunities and ancient relics. It possesses features that are common to many Sahyadri sites. Situated on the outskirts of Loanar town in Buldhana District, Maharashtra, Lonar crater is an important geological structure. From Pune, the most convenient route is to first reach Aurangabad via bus (Mumbai and Pune) and then take a state transport bus to Lonar. From Pune, air-conditioned and regular buses run every hour from the Shivajinagar bus stand.

Kamshet
Kamshet is a renowned hill station located at a height of about 2200 feet above sea level. A picturesque tourist destination in the Western Ghats in the state of Maharashtra in India, Kamshet makes a perfect destination for adventure sports like hiking, mountaineering and all other paragliding activities. kamshet is spotted as one of the great adventurous destinations in India.

Khandala
Apart from the splendorous natural mystic, Khandala, the pride of the Sahayadri mountains is a hot spot for the hiking and trekking lovers. Located at an altitude of 625 meters, in the foothills of the majestic Sahyadris, this hilly terrain is a popular trendy place from Mumbai and Pune. If you are obsessed about mounting the heights in a charming atmosphere then khandala is your place.

Nagphani or Duke’s nose
A hiker’s delight, Dukes Nose or Nagphani is a 800-foot monolith located in Khandala. Locally known as Nagphani or hood of the snake, as the cliff also resembles the hood of the snake, the British named it Duke"s Nose after Duke of Wellington (his pointed nose resembled this cliff). One can reach the top of Dukes Nose in one and a half hours. If you are new to hiking, this is an excellent place to go. A pleasant day-long hike will reward you with great views from the summit. The easy accessibility of the trail-head, located near Khandala, is another big advantage for the beginners.

Harishchandragad
Harishchandragad lies where the boundaries of Thane, Pune & Ahmednagar districts converge. You can reach there from Pune. There is bus from swarget to Khireswar village daily. Harishchandragad is a truly amazing hiking spot with thick forests, huge cliffs and ancient monuments. A minimum of two days is required to visit this area. It is one of the ancient forts in Western ghats and is a dream trekking and hiking destination. Some prior hiking experience and immunity to the fear of heights is recommended.

Naneghat
Naneghat is not just a hiking destination but a trip down ancient history. It is ideal for anyone interested in a rewarding one-day adventure out of Pune or Mumbai. It is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats range near Junnar in Pune district of Maharashtra. This sheer cliff is clearly visible from the konkan. Hikers do not forget you take your cameras here.

Telbaila
This peak is located in a remote region south of Lonavla. The characteristic shape of this rock formation provides a good rock-climbing experience for an expert climber.

Sinhagad
Sinhagad is situated at a distance of 25 km from Pune and is one of the prominent near by tourist destinations of the city. It’s the perfect place for rock-climbing enthusiasts and the place ensure you a good trekking experience. While climbing up the mountain, people may come across shrubs, paddy fields and Pangara trees. You may visit Sinhagad at any time of the year, however, the most preferred season to visit Sinhagad is from August to September for a memorable hiking experience.
