The Trekking Trip to Sinhagad

Historic Significance
Sinhagad is a fort that stands tall as a symbol of bravery of the Maratha warriors under the leadership of Tanaji Malusare- the general of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The massive fort has a historic importance and has been the site of wanton bloodshed and great massacres in many battles. The most notable battle among many was the 1670 battle where Tanaji Malusare sacrificed his life and Maratha warriors capture the fort. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj termed Tanaji as “sinha” meaning lion and renamed Kondhana as Sinhagad. The fort lies 30km southwest of Pune and the majestic construction stands handsomely about 800m above the surrounding area. Sinhagad fort holds immense importance in the Maratha history as it was located right at the centre of the series of other forts such as Purandar, Torna and Rajgad. The fort perches on a cut off the Bhuleshwar range in the Sahyadri mountains. Its altitude from the sea level is about 1350m.

Sinhagad’s picturesque backdrop and proximity from Pune city makes it an attractive picnic hotspot for the young and old alike who takes pride in visiting this place. It is not uncommon for Punekars to visit it at a drop of a hat. Sinhagad is also an ideal place fro trekking lovers. The stretch of 6 Kms from foot of the hill to the fort amid bushes and boulders, thick greenery, huge mountains with pleasant breeze flowing by and clouds passing is by no means less than an adventure. Sunday morning appear more like an army of ants busy moving about in a search of the unknown. It takes at least 3 hours to move up and down the hill. It is good to opt for loose attire and sport shoes, carry with you a water bottel, however not carrying a camera with you might leave you with pangs of guilt for a long time. This trek is a part of the curriculum of NDA for training its cadets. Non trekkers who find it difficult can skip the fun and reach Sinhagad via road which takes about 30 min from Sinhagad village. It is one of the best one day trip destination in Pune.

Why Sinhagad
Sinhagad is must visit place for those who are interested in Shivaji’s history. The lush greenery of Sahyadri Hills, the panoramic view of Khadakwasla Lake and the serene climate is an awesome place for nature lovers and photo enthusiasts. The sight of young couples cuddling in each other’s warmth may bring back the memories of one’s “hey” days. For gourmands, Kanda Bhaji (Onion Pakoda) and Pitla Bhakri (Besin and Jowar roti),a Maharashtra cuisine, offers delicious food. However, there are several eateries made up of thatched huts which sell other food items such as yummy corncob, mouth-watering boiled peanuts, and of course – water and soft-drinks.

How to reach and the best time to Visit?
Sinhagad can be visited in all seasons, preferably during months of July-December. It is 30 Kms away from Pune station and can be reached via road. Public transport is available and there are good number of private vehicles plying between Pune Station and Sinhagad.
