All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.
Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, known simply as "CMC Vellore", was founded by Ida S. Scudder, and located in the city of Vellore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, South India. It is generally considered to be one of the best five medical colleges in India. CMC has been consistently ranked among the best medical colleges in India . Independent surveys published in 2006 by both India today-ORG MARG and Outlook-Cfore ranks CMC second in the overall survey of the best medical colleges in India next only to AIIMS Delhi.
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) is a premier medical college in India, which trains high quality doctors. It is located in Pune city in the state of Maharashtra. The college is managed by the Indian Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Medical College has multiple roles to perform. These are primarily training of medical undergraduates and post-graduates, dental postgraduates, nursing cadets and paramedical staff. Patient care forms an integral part of its training curriculum and the attached hospitals benefits from the expertise available at AFMC. The institution is responsible for providing the entire pool of specialists and super specialists to Armed Forces by giving them in service training.
JIPMER traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called "Ecole de Medicine de Pondichery" was established by French government. In November 1956 the Government of India took over the medical college in the wake of the ‘de facto’ transfer of Pondicherry. JIPMER which includes a tertiary care referral hospital is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It has both under-graduate as well as post-graduate medical and paramedical courses.
Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, opened its doors on June 30, 1953. The college started with only the pre-clinical section at Manipal and the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. But with the clinical program having commenced at Manipal in 1969, it became a full-fledged independent college. The Medical Council of India granted recognition in 1958 with the first graduating batch of KMC. Recognition by the General Medical Council of Great Britain and the Malaysian Medical Council soon followed. Today Manipal University (of which KMC is a constituent college) degrees are recognized in all countries.

The Grant Medical College, Mumbai is a medical school affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. It is one of the premier medical institutions in India and is one of the oldest institution teaching Western medicine in Asia. At present, the college accepts 200 students per year for the undergraduate course and has more seats for postgraduate courses.

St. John's Medical College is one of India's premier medical institutions. It is part of the St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences run by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. It was established in 1963 and is situated in Bangalore, India.The college annually accepts 60 students for the MBBS undergraduate course based on a national entrance exam. It also accepts over 30 postgraduate students to a number of medical specialities.
The Madras Medical College is a prominent educational institution located in Chennai, India. It was established on February 2nd, 1835 and is one of the oldest medical schools of the Indian subcontinent.
