Kanyakumari: Most Visited Places in India

Kanyakumari is a city located in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India and attracts more than 2 million tourists from abroad as well as India. The unique feature of this big town is that it is located on the southernmost tip of India and numerous phenomena that are observed here cannot be witnessed anywhere else in the world. The union of three seas; The Indian Ocean, The Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal can literally be seen just before sunset as different shades of blue amalgamate to become one. Moreover there are temples, mesmerizing statues, and islands that can be visited by a ferry.

The city of Kanyakumari is a potpourri of many cultures and languages that are taught here. The effect of this is not only immediately palpable on the temples and their architecture but is also accentuated by the fact that the literacy rate in the city is 99% and it has 60% more college degree holders compared to any other district in India. Academics aside, the city is an important tourist attraction for millions of people and the plethora of experiences and the coastal beauty of the place can overwhelm a visitor.

Places of Interest:
Vivekananda Rock Memorial: This memorial stands around 500 meters off the coast of Kanyakumari and can be easily reached by a ferry. The monument is considered sacred since Swami Vivekananda meditated on this small island rock and attained enlightenment here. The memorial also has a meditation hall for tourists and visitors along with the delights of architectural wonders. The meditation hall also has a statue of Vivekananda and the merger of the three seas- Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Arabian Sea can be seen from these rocks. The 133 feet statue of saint and poet Thiruvalluvar is built here which is one of the biggest statues in Asia.

Vattakottai Fort: This fort which gives a breathtaking view of the sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other was constructed by the ex Dutch Naval officer for the Travancore army. Literally meaning, a circular fort, it lies on the sea shore near Kanyakumari and is a protected site under the Indian archeological department. A part of the fort leads to the sea and the recent renovation has made it a major tourist spot.

Muttom: Muttom is a fishing village located around 20 miles from Kanyakumari and has some interesting places that are major tourist attractions near Kanyakumari. The place has a lighthouse and the area is hilly which gives an opportunity for enjoying the scenic beauty of the sea as well as the mesmerizing sunrise and the sunset. The All Saints Church is also one of the attractions which is located in the town and is known for its exquisite Portuguese architecture.

Mathur Aqueduct: This is an Acqueduct located about 40 miles from Kanyakumari and is the longest and largest Aqueduct in South Asia according to some resources. Located near the Pahrali River, the place offers stunning glimpses of the Western Ghats with a lush green carpet of forests. The view from the center of the bridge (Acqueduct) is truly breathtaking with coconut trees and forests which form a green carpet stretching almost all the way to the mountains of the Western Ghats.

Vettaparai Falls: Located about 20 miles from the town of Kanyakumari are the Vettiparai Falls in the Keeriparai reserve forest near a village called Bhootapandi. There are numerous small waterfalls in the area and the most famous among these are Vattaparai Falls and Kalikesam falls. The place is dotted with trees and shrubs and pollution free; moreover, these waters are considered to be medicinal and people often come here to take a dip for its salubrious properties. This place is good for getting away from the hullabaloo of the coastal town of Kanyakumari in order to refresh and unwind.
