The city of Hyderabad well known for its famous Hyderabadi biryani is also famous for Charminar.  It is the Landmark of the city. It was erected in 1591 by Quli Qutb Shah when he shifted the capital from Golconda to Hyderabad. The monument is a perfect square shape building with Tall minarets at each corner. The monument shines to its glory in the night with colorful lights.

 

The Charminar is a square monument with a measurement of 20 mtr on each side. The four minarets stand 48.7 mtr above the ground. Each minaret is 4 storey and the floors are divided by a gracefully carved ring around it. From Charminar another famous monument of Hyderabad, Mecca Masjid, is also visible. The Charminar is situated right in the heart of the city in between a busy market and thus is a huge attraction for the tourists.

Facts about Charminar •    Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah constructed this landmark in the year 1591.
•    People say that it is the result of a secret promise made by Md. Quli Qutb to honor Allah.
•    The building acquired it’s fame because of the four minarets.
•    These four minarets symbolize and honor Islam’s 1st four Khalifas.
•    The mosque actually occupies the top most floor of the monument.
•    The minarets are actually the four storey structures.
•    It is also said that there is an underground tunnel that links the charminar to Golconda Fort, which was the former capital of Quli Qutb Shah, and provides an escape route to the royal family in case of an emergency. However the location of the secret tunnel is unknown
•    Charminar is an exact square monument which is an ideal example of India’s architectural background. 
•    The structure of the monument is a perfect square where each of the side measures 20mtr and the two sides are connected with a tall minaret which is a 4 storey building with a height of 48.7 mtrs.
•    The four stories of each minaret is marked by carved ring which is visible from outside.
•    To get to the top floor one has to climb 149 flights of steps. All the four minarets are enclosed by 149 flights of steps.
 •   Each side of the Minar has a giant arch, which is 11 m wide and 20 m high, measuring from the summit to the plinth.
•    Each arch also has a clock, which was installed in 1889.
•    The Charminar is a monument built with granite and lime mortar in Cazia style of architecture.
•    Within Charminar there lies two one over another.
•    Along with a stone balcony there is a terrace above the two galleries which acts like a roof.
•    The main gallery of the Minar has 45 covered prayer spaces. Just in front, there is a large open space to accommodate more people for prayers on Fridays.
•    The intricate carvings and moldings on the monument make Charminar a famous monument and a landmark of Hyderabad.
