India celebrates its 62nd Independance Day on 15th August 2008. Half a century and more than decade later, India has come a long way. This year, we've witnessed many highs and lows in our country - terror attacks in Rajasthan and Bangalore, IPLs, winning the world cup in Cricket T20, the sensex soaring and falling, recession, getting our first individual Gold medal at the Olympics.
Despite of all these trials and tribulations, the country moves forward to celebrate our Independance Day. And not only in India, Indians all around the world are preparing for a grand celebration on the 15th of August, 2008. The Independence Day of India, which is celebrated throughout the Country on the 15th of August every year, holds tremendous ground in the list of national days, since it reminds all Indians about the fateful morning of 15th August 1947 when, India was declared independent from British colonialism of 200 years, and the reins of control were handed over to the leaders of the Country. India’s gaining of independence was a tryst with destiny, as the struggle for freedom was a long and tiresome one, witnessing the sacrifices of many freedom fighters, who laid down their lives on the line. The India Association of Greater Boston(IAGB) has been serving the Indian American community in the Greater Boston area since 1962. Its mission is to preserve and foster Indian culture, and to strengthen Indo-American friendship. This year too, they have planned a cultural event on the 17th of August at Boston's Hatch Memorial. About 15,000 people are expected to attend the event where about 500 dancers, singers and musicians will enthrall the audience with a diverse selection of vibrant performances showcasing the rich traditions, culture and heritage of India.
