IPL to Move Out of India

IPL to Move Out of India

The politics have forced the second edition of Indian Premier League to move out of India. IPL 2008 was not less than a 45 days long carnival full of enthusiasm, energy and sportsmanship. People were expecting the same or rather a little more from this year’s IPL series, but to our disappointment, because of General Elections 2009 (as the Government said) the IPL is shifted from India. There will be no IPL cricket, beautiful cheerleaders on Indian ground. The new IPL destination is South Africa. So this time we have to stick to our television sets to support and chase out favourite team. Taking IPL out of the country shows BCCI’s commitment but sparked many controversies as well.

The Latest Updateson IPL 2009:

On Tuesday 24th March 2009, IPL commissioner and Cricket South Africa Chief Executive Gerald Majola announced that South Africa will be the host country for second season of the DLF Indian Premier League. The schedule will start from April 18 2009. The venues are yet to be announced.

Out of three possible host destinations South Africa was the one which was most favourable climatic conditions and in order to telecast all matches at scheduled timing (4-00 p.m. and 8-00 p.m. IST) start of the games could be achieved more practically here than in England or New Zealand, which were the other venue nations being considered.

The English weather condition in April and early May was another reason to head the tournament to South Africa. The rain could affect almost 70% of the IPL matches if they would have been scheduled for England.

The teams will start flying to South Africa from April 1, 2009. Cape Town will be the destination for opening ceremony with the inaugural match being played on 18th April. Chances are that Wanderers in Johannesburg will be the venue for the grand finale. Five other cities have already been identified, Durban, Centurion, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. East London and Bloemfontein are competing for a host city berth.
