About the Festival - Ganesh Utsav

Ganesha is regarded as the patron deity and the God of wisdom. The preparations to celebrate Ganesh Utsav starts during the months of August to September. It is considered as the auspicious day when Lord Ganesh was born and begins with great enthusiasm all over the state.

The festival is celebrated for 11 days and it starts off with setting the statue of beautifully sculpted Ganesha idols in homes and mandaps which is a temporarily made-up stage). The first day is called 'Ganesh Chaturthi'. The mandap is colorfully decorated, depicting religious themes or current events.

The Ganesh idols are worshiped with families and friends. Many cultural events are organized and people participate in them with keen interest. The last day of the festival is called 'Visarjan' wherein after ten days the time comes to bid farewell to the beloved God. The farewell is done by submerging the Ganesh idols in the river.

The size of the Ganesh idols ranges from 3/4th of an inch to over 25 feet. The shape of the idols also varies depending upon which form the mandals want to depict. There is no evidence in case of region other than Maharashtra that the installed idol was kept or could be kept for longer period.

Grand Celebration in Pune and Mumbai
Pune and Mumbai is known as the hub of Ganesh Chatuthi. People from all over the country specially visit these two districts to participate in the Festival. In Maharashtra, usually the day of Ganesh Chaturthi and Visarjan is declared as a holiday, mainly due to rush and traffic on the roads. A mandap is erected at almost each street corner in the city.

It takes days to make the Ganesh idols and made quite huge. Each year the makers used to increase the height. But now the Government has passed a rule wherein the height of the statue cannot exceed a certain height. This has been done to prevent the hazardous pollution of public water bodies.

Visarjan
The disposal of worshiped idol is to be made preferably in the sea or running stream or may be made in pond or well, which must be other than one’s own. The immersion of the worshiped image takes place not earlier than the afternoon of the second day all over Maharashtra. The immersion period could be a day and a half or five or a higher number of odd days later until the last day of bright fourteenth, which is known as Anant Chaturdashi. Now-a-days, eco-friendly Ganesh idols are being made. The material used to make the idols are harmless and easily dissolves in water.

The History behind Celebrating Ganesh Festival

In Pune
In olden days, one sardar of Peshwa named Nanasaheb Khajgiwale in 1892 visited the palace of Gwalior, where he came across Ganesh Utsav. People from all walks of life participated in this utsav. Seeing this, Nanasaheb got delighted and decided to start the same kind of festival at Pune, the capital of Peshwa.

Accordingly, in 1896 Shri Khajgiwale, Shri Ghotawadekar and Shri Bhau Rangari arranged a Sarvajanik PublicGanesh Utsav and in the same year, Ganesh immersion ritual was also started. In the next year of 1897, the number of Ganesh mandals increased alarmingly, and the question of whose Ganpati will be the first in cavalcade was hotly debated.

At this crucial time, Shri Lokmanya Tilak and Shri Annasaheb Patwardhan were called to resolve the issue. They gave first preference to Jijamata Prasthapit Kasaba Ganapati Ganesh Utsav mandal. Thereafter, people started celebrating Ganesh Utsav on a large scale.

In Mumbai
K.Ganesheshavji Naik Chawl (Girgaon) was the pioneer in starting the Ganesh Utsav in Mumbai with the figure being around 2500 at present thereby signifying the ever increasing popularity of this festival. It is celebrated with great fervor and pomp in old Mumbai- Southern region and Central region.

Each mandal has it’s own way of celebrating the festival. Some of them lay emphasis on performing pooja while some lay emphasis on carrying out social activities like blood donation camps, free medical checkups, scholarships to poor and bright students and so on.

Sweet Dishes Made during Ganesh Utsav
Ganesh Utsav is also the time where each household prepares a variety of sweets and other savoring dishes. The sweets are made as an offering to Ganesha during the worship and passed among people by the priest as prasad. Some of the famous dishes made are modak, moti chur laddoo, puran poli, moong Dal halwa, kaju katli, karanji, chivda and besan laddoo. Check out their recipes here

Hi Ganesh,I have clearly mentioned the year 1892 which was the first time Nanasaheb Khajgiwale saw the utsav being celebrated in Gwalior and followed the same custom in Pune. Please see the 2nd line under the heading 'The History behind Celebrating Ganesh Festival'.

THE MAIN IDEA THEN BEHIND CELEBRATING GANESH FESTIVAL WAS TO GATHER PEOPLE RATHER LIKE NOW A DAYS ITS REALY DISAPOINTING.DUE TO WHICH THEY WERE ABLE TO CREATE AWARENESS OF GETTING FREEDOM TO OUR NATION IN THE MINDS OF PEOPLE AT THAT TIME. BUT AT PRESENT ITS NOT HAPPNING SO. THIS IS ACCEPTIONAL FOR SOME GANESH UTSAV MANDALS, WHO TRY TO CREATE AWARENESS REGARDING OTHER ISSUES. FOR EG. POLLUTION, POPULATION, SAVING WATER, GLOBAL WARMIMG ETC.BUT THE PERCENTAGE IS LOWER OF GOOD THAN THAT OF NOT GOOD.
