The Jim Corbett National Park is famous for the diversities of wildlife that includes over 50 spices of mammals and over 580 spices of birds. The park is part of the Corbett tiger reserve which lies in the Himalayan foothills of Uttaranchal in Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Almora and Binjore district.

The Jim Corbett National park is named after Jim Corbett who was a hunter turned conservationist. Jim Corbett national park is the oldest national park in India and Jim Corbett played a key role in establishment. The park was established way back in 1936 known as Hailey National Park. The park is located in the state of Uttaranchal in the foothills of Himalayas in Nainital district. It is also known as Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve. Commonly observed wildlife includes the spotted deer, wild boars, sambar, barking deer, rhesus macaques, langur monkeys, peacocks and herds of wild elephants. Corbett is a paradise for birdwatcher's, containing over 580 different species of birds.

In 1936 it was named after Uttar Pradesh’s Governor Mr. Malcolm Hailey and was known as Hailey National park. After the independence in 1947 it was renamed as Ramganga National Park. Then in 1957 it was renamed as Jim Corbett National Park. Jim Corbett was the one who helped out and was responsible for marking out the boundaries and set up.

Travel Information:
Every year about 70,000 visitors come to see the flora and fauna of Jim Corbett National park from India and across the globe. The park is open from November to June only, Rest of the months it is closed because of the heavy rainfall. The Jim Corbett headquarters are located in Ramnagar.

Location :
Corbett is situated about 290 km northeast of Delhi, in Uttaranchal province. The nearest railway station is at the town of Ramnagar. Most of the accommodation within Corbett is at Dhikala, located about 40 km northwest of Ramnagar.
Getting to Corbett national park : Overnight trains connect Delhi to the town of Ramnagar, trains also connect Varanasi via Lucknow to Ramnagar. Visitors can hire jeeps at Ramnagar to transport them into the park and Dhikala.

The tiger reserve covers an area of about 1,300 sq. km including about 500 sq. km of core area and 800 sq. km of buffer area. The core area forms the Corbett national park while the buffer area contains the Sonanadi wildlife sanctuary and reserve forests. Corbett tiger reserve forms the catchment area of the Ramganga, a tributary of the river Ganga.
