Manmohan Singh's Daughters - Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh

Amrit Singh – 41
Amrit Singh, the youngest of all three is a staff attorney at ACLU’s Immigrant’s Rights Project. She keeps a very low profile in Indian community for which she does not speak about his famous father Dr. Manmohan Singh and her job profile in US. She is a graduate from Cambridge University, Oxford University and Yale Law School. She attained BA in Economics from Cambridge, M Phil from Oxford and Law Degree from Yale Law School. She is married to Barton Beebe who is a Law professor at New York University School of Law. She is also the co-author of the book “Administration of Torture”. She is the attorney who represents the American Civil Liberties Union, was honored with the Access to Justice Leadership Award from SABANY for her work as a counsel in the ACLU vs. Department of Defense case, a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed to seek records relating to the torture of detainees held in US custody abroad.

Daman Singh – 47
Manmohan Singh’s second daughter, Daman Singh is a writer. Daman Singh is a graduate of St. Stephen's College, Delhi and Institute of Rural Management, Anand, Gujarat. Unlike her sisters, she too keeps a low profile. She does not have a cell phone for herself living in one of the elite areas in New Delhi. Her first novel was nine by nine that talks about the pre-mobile era of modern India. The simple worded novel was a great book by a debutant. Other books written by Daman include The last frontier: People and forests in Mizoram, Sacred Grove and Denial.

Upinder Singh – 51
Eldest of all three daughters of Manmohan Singh is Upinder Singh. She is an author and professor in the history department at the University of Delhi. She is also the joint recipient of the inaugural Infosys Prize in the category of Social Sciences (History). The jury for social sciences, headed by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. The prize money worth Rs.5-million (Rs.50 lakh) was divided amongst the two winners. She was recognized for her contributions as an outstanding historian of ancient and early medieval India. The Infosys Science Foundation has instituted the prize. She studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and received her PhD from McGill University, Canada. So far she has written 4 books and in her latest work she challenges the Marxist view of Indian history, by focusing on not only economics, and politics, but also religion and philosophy. She has done research on the history of Delhi, and has said that it is one of the oldest cities in the world.
