The college is named after Padmashree Dr. Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil popularly called as Dr. D.Y. Patil. He is a famous educator and is currently holding the position as Governor of Tripura. Dr. D.Y. Patil receives an honorary award, Padma Shree, for his contribution in the social works. He also has established various educational institutes in Maharashtra. The famous of them all are D. Y. Patil college of Engineering and Technology at Kolhapur, D Y Patil College of Engineering at Pune and D.Y. Patil Medical College at Pune.

D.Y. Patil Medical College at Pune was established in the year 1996 and was the first private Medical College in the state of Maharashtra to receive approval from Medical Council of India (MCI) to award MBBS degree to the very first batch. The college was accorded the status of a University in the year 2003. Today it is one of the best medical colleges in Pune, ranked at no. 4.
