College of Engineering, Pune (COEP)is among the top most and prestigious engineering college in India. It was established in the year 1854, and is the third oldest engeneering college in Asia, after the College of Engineering, Guindy (1794) and IIT Roorkee (1847). It is located in Pune, Maharashtra. The students and alumni of COEP are colloquially referred to as CEOPians.

In the year 2004, the college was granted complete autonomy by the state government of Maharashtra, and notified as a center of excellence in technical education. The institute today functions as an autonomous enjineering college with permanent affiliation to the University of Pune.

The college's study model known as Poona Model in the early 50's is highly respected by the industry and public works. The autonomous struture of the college now grants it greater flexibility in dynamically changing its syllabus according to the changing needs of the industry.

Specializations and departments
At present, College Of Engineering Pune (COEP) awards the degree of Bachelor Technology (earlier the Bachelor of Engineering or the BE) in nine specializations. They were introduced subsequently since the inception of college.

The sandwich pattern courses was introduced in the field of Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy and Production. The model is designed in such a way that the students spend their 5th and 8th semesters working in the industry and gain experience for such work, under the watchful eye of a faculty member and an industrial manager. The Master of Technology (M Tech) is also awarded and the research for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is also introduced in various fields.
Admissions
The admissions to COEP are based on merit and are very competitive. Previously, the admissions were given after taking into consideration the percentage of science subjects secured in Higher Secondary School Exam of Maharashtra state. Today- the admission process is changed and are given upon marks scored in Common Entrance Test for Engineering of Maharashtra state (MHT-CET). There are special programs designed for students from north-eastern India, Indian citizens from Kashmir and programs for children of non-resident Indians (NRIs) in the college. The reservations are applied for SC( Schedule Caste), ST( Schedule Tribes), NT(Nomadic tribes), OBC(Other Backward Classes),PH( Physically handicapped) as well as Female candidates based on the Government of India and Government of Maharashtra rules.In addition to this- many students join different departments directly after first year. These students are those who have previously completed Diploma in Engineering at various polytechnics in the state of Maharashtra and are admitted after going through a process conducted by the DTE.
Activities
MindSpark
The Mindspark is a annually hosted technology festival organized by the College Of Engineering (COEP),Pune. The festival was started in the year 2007 and has gained popularity as India's largest technical festivals in terms of participation. The idea to organize such a event was to unite various departments level festivals which were scattered across the Academic Calender. The MindSpark organization has grown over the period of time- consisting of 20 students managing the administrative portfolios assisted by a team of approx 800 coordinators and volunteers. MidSpark usually is held in the first fortnight of October and features 50 events across various discipline of engineering. MindSpark is backed by industry sponsors who are also in sink with COEP for placement.
Gymkhana
The gymkhana is the place where all the student activities are chalked out and coordinated. The Gymkhana is the hole and sole of sports, cultural and extra cultural activities. It organizes the team delegations to different fests, competitions and organizes the college gathering and annual functions. The Gymkhana managing committee consists of a student's body members who take charge of their particular division.The Gymkhana is the real core for everything to do with student activities in college such as gathering, sports, drama, debating, magazine, etc...
Boat Club
College of Engineering (COEP) is a proud member of Boat Club- one of its kind in India. The club is situated on the banks of Mula River and was established in the year 1928. The boat club presently has about 70 trainee and racing boats, which are used for various competitions and for regular practice. The club is associated with various professional associations such as Maharashtra Rowing Association (MRA), Maharashtra Association for Canoeing & Kayaking (MACK) and the Amateur Rowers Association (ARAE). The COEP annually organizes 'Regatta' literally meaning boat festival. The last edition of Regatta was held on 21st March 2010 featured an Eighter, one of the oldest in the world.
HAM Club
Amateur Radio(Ham) Club was established in the year 1986, and is the oldest technical club of COEP. It communicates using the callsign VU2COE. COEP Ham Club has communicated with almost each and every corner of the world and even the International Space Station. Ham Club organizes the A.S.O.C exams and also provide support to students for the same. They also conduct introductory workshops, basic antenna designing workshops annually in COEP and also in different colleges on invitation.
Technical Events
The Robot Study Circle in COEP is working with an objective to produce prospective winners for the national level robotics competitions like Shasstra, Techfest, and Robocon. The college has close association with many manufacturing industries in and around Pune where students participate in academic projects.
COEP Astronomy Club
The club was started in the year 2005 by a small group of astronomy enthusiasts. It has gained popularity and grown as one of the most prominent centers of activity in college. Activities include regular lectures, astrophotography, sky observations, building telescopes etc.. Top engineering firms in the country give preference to COEP fresh graduates. In the recent times- companies like Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, IBM, Microsoft, Accenture, Yahoo, Sasken, Google, Symantec, TCS, Cognizant, L&T, FIAT India,Volkswagen India, TIBCO Softwares and D E Shaw India Software, Pvt. Ltd have actively participated in the placement process of the college.
