Bollywood's Flop Debutantes

Bollywood's Flop Debutantes

New entrants in Bollywood have either become huge success stories or simply have faded away from the limelight. We bring you eight such names who fizzled out while their counterparts went on to become big stars. Take a look:

Ameesha opposite Hrithik Roshan

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai | January 14, 2000
The film was a huge success and overnight the two actors became the heartthrobs of the nation. Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in fact was the top grossing film of 2000 and won both Ameesha and Hrithik Roshan a lot of awards. Strangely though, Ameesha never managed to sustain this success. Flops after flops followed. Then the alleged affair with Vikram Bhatt and that was pretty much where it all ended. Ameesha did make a comeback of sorts in Yash Raj's Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic. But we are yet to hear anyone even talk about her performance in it.

Shanti Priya opposite Akshay Kumar

Saugandh | January 25, 1991
You may well think of Deepika Padukone from Om Shanti Om when we talk of Shanti Priya. Believe it or not, but an actress by this name does exist and she made her debut opposite Akshay Kumar. The movie was Saugandh and also starred Rakhee Gulzar and Ashwini Bhave. Saugandh went on to become the biggest flop. While Khiladi changed things for Akshay Kumar, Shanti Priya had no such luck. She went on to act in few films before turning to television serials.

Bhagyashree opposite Salman Khan

Maine Pyar Kiya | December 29, 1989
Unlike Shantipriya, Bhagyashree had a dream debut. Starring opposite Salman Khan in a Barjatya film Maine Pyar Kiya, Bhagyashree also became a star just like Salman. The movie was the biggest hit of 1989 in India and is considered a landmark movie. Maine Pyar Kiya established Salman as a major actor in Bollywood and also got Bhagyashree a lot of offers. But the actress turned down every single one of them and chose to work just with her husband Himalaya. She did films like (hold your breath) Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul, Tyagi and Paayal, which bombed very badly at the box office. She did a bit of television too.

Madhoo opposite Ajay Devgan

Phool Aur Kaante | November 22, 1991
This film marked the debut of Ajay Devgan and Madhoo, niece of actress Hema Malini. Phool Aur Kaante was a roaring success and was particularly noted for its soundtrack. It was produced by Dinesh Patel and directed by Sandesh Kohli. Both went on to give many hits individually and Ajay Devgan too carved a niche for himself. But Madhoo somehow fizzled out, then got married and no one seems to miss her anyway.

Kamal Sadanah opposite Kajol

Bekhudi | July 31, 1992
Chances are that you may ask Kamal, who? Well he was the guy who made his debut opposite Kajol in Bekhudi. The film failed miserably at the box office. But then Baazigar happened and there was no turning back for Kajol. Of course Kamal Sadanah couldn't blot out a single hit and then turned to production. Kajol of course went on to marry Ajay Devgan and with U Me Aur Hum showed that she can still pack a punch.

Shadab Khan opposite Rani Mukherji

Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat | 1996
Let's face it, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat is not a film Rani Mukherji would want to be associated with today. But she did make her debut with it as did Shadab Khan, Amjad Khan's son. The film failed miserably at the box office. He did come back as a baddie in J P Dutta's Refugee, but vanished again soon after. But Rani Mukherji managed to belt out hits like Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Shadab, by the way, turned to direction.

Mamta Kulkarni opposite Saif Ali Khan

Aashiq Awara | May 19, 1993
Mamta Kulkarni was already a star of sorts before the release of Aashiq Awara. So this film did her some good. Ironically Saif Ali Khan was the one man for whom the film didn't do anything whatsoever. But then thankfully Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Yeh Dillagi happened. Years later Dil Chahta Hai followed and then Kal Ho Na Ho. By then Mamta Kulkarni disappeared altogether. Today she has reportedly settled in New York with her husband.

Anjala Jhaveri and Akshaye Khanna

Himalaya Putra | 1997
When Himalay Putra hit the screens everyone was talking about Vinod Khanna's son. Today Akshaye Khanna has managed to carve a niche for himself. He has even belted out a hit this year in Race. But his heroine Anjala Jhaveri is nowhere to be seen in Bollywood. She was part of Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya but after that her career graph barely managed to rise. She is reportedly working in South Indian movies even as Akshaye chooses the films he wants to be part of.
