What is the major part of any country’s culture? It’s the history, food, architecture and the clothes people wear. India, the land of unity in diversity, has always been a nation with rich cultural heritage. Because of this rich cultural past India is known as “Sone ki Chidiya” which literally means “A Golden Bird”. The reason for which the foreign emperors came to India was the rich spices and textiles. The fabric then was the finest fabric available in the world. Since then India is considered as a major textile hub in the world.

In early days, the foreign rulers were attracted towards the costumes that Indian people wore and today as well, it is well known world over for its fabric, dresses, attire and accessories.

Here we have listed below the attire wore by Indians across the nation :

Women’s clothing:
  • Saree : The six yards of sheer elegance. It is an unstitched piece of cloth draped around the waist. The draping style is different in each state. Saree is the most common attire

  • Salwar Kameez : Loose bottoms (known as salwar) with a loose knee length Top (known as Kurta) and commonly accompanied by a stole called dupatta or chunni.

  • Churidar and Kurta: Churidar is the tight fitted bottoms (something like extra long leggings) with a loose fitted knee length top.

  • Lehenga choli (occasional wear): Lehenga is the most common bridal wear in the Indian wedding. Lehenga is a long flared skirt accompanied by a blouse (short or till waist line) and a dupatta.

Men’s clothing:
  • Kurta Pajama: Kurtas are the Long loose tops (generally full sleeves) and mostly knee length accompanied by little loose bottoms known as pajamas.

  • Churidar Kurta: Kurtas are the Long loose tops (generally full sleeves) and mostly knee length accompanied by tight fitting bottoms known as Churidar.

  • Dhoti Kurta: The men in UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat wear a bottom drape in a different style, called Dhoti. One of the Famous Indian Mr. Mahatma Gandhi also used to wear dhoti.

  • Sherwani:
    Sherwani is the Groom’s wear and a special occasion dress for men. Sherwani is a coat-like garment buttoned in the front, which reaches down to the knees.

  • Lungi Shirt: The men in Southern parts of India usually wear shirts with a drape called lungi or they can be called Sarongs.
