Sinhagad Fort, though in ruins, is still a beautiful place for history buffs. If you want to know about Pune’s history, then a visit to Sinhagad Fort is a must. Sinhagad is the tomb of Tanaji, Shivaji’s favorite general. Tanaji died here in the year 1670 after a successful bid to capture the fort. As per legends, Tanaji and his men climbed the unprotected near-perpendicular face of the hill. He is said to climb up with the help of Ghorpad ‘Indian Iguana’ also a local species of lizard. The lizard, named Yashwanti, anchored herself to a crevice in the rock face with strength enough for 300 troops to climb the fort!
Siinhagad Fort is located on a hill top, hence it offers an amazing view of the Pune city. Sinhagad is also a popular trekking site as the fort is located at a height of 700 meters and has an interesting track which is an experience to explore. At Sinhagad fort you get to eat one of the most delicious Pithla Bhakri (a local Maharashtrian cuisine) along with fresh buttermilk which is available at the road side shops at the fort base.
A visit to Sinhagad is a good experience in all seasons. However, if you really want to see the beauty of the place, visit Sinhagad during or post monsoon season i.e. from July to October.
