Murud is one of the most popular beach town in the state of Maharashtra. Murud – Janjira, a peaceful fishing village with a pretty seashore and a helter-skelter of wooden cottages. Murud is the fishing village and Murud Janjira is the local name for a fort situated on an island just off the coastal village of Murud, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India. It was occupied by the Siddis and is famous for being the only fort along India’s Western coast that remained undefeated despite Dutch, Maratha and English East India Company attacks.
Murud-Janjira Fort is situated on an oval-shaped rock off the Arabian Sea coast near the port town of Murud, 165 km (103 mi) south of Mumbai. Janjira is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India. The fort is approached by sailboats from Rajapuri jetty. The main gate of the fort faces Rajapuri on the shore and can be seen only when one is about 40 feet away from it .
The best time to visit Murud Janjira is during the summer and winter months from September to June when the temperature ranges between 15°C and 32°C. However, being a coastal region, many people avoid visiting Murud Janjira during summers because of the high humidity levels. It is also advisable to avoid visiting this place during the monsoon months, from July to September, when you cannot go for sightseeing or take part in outdoor/adventure activities.
